Great North Run 2024 · 8 September 2024 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

This year, 2024, I have taken part in 8 runs, of differing lengths, between March and November.

These were:

Nottingham 10k (10th March) For this one, I was actually a pacer for the event too, as my running club (Long Eaton Running Club) were the pacers for the event. I was one of the 1hr 10min pacers. (Completed)

Great Run, Birmingham (5th May) (Completed)

Derbion Ramathon, Derby (30th June) (Completed)

Wilne 10k, Draycott (Derbyshire) (1st September) (Completed)

Great North Run, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (8th September) (Completed)

Robin Hood Half Marathon, Nottingham (29th September) (Completed)

Halloween Half Marathon, Worksop (27th October) (Completed)

Derby 10 Mile, Derby, (17th November) (Completed)

Thank you to all that have sponsored me this year (2024) it has been greatly appreciated. This has been one of the best years I have had ever with my fundraising.

The support I have had this year too, from friends, members of my running club (Long Eaton Running Club) many presenters from BBC Radio Nottingham as well, has been very much welcomed and appreciated.

This year though, one of the highlights and major things for me, upon this journey of the 8 runs, was that I've gained a great friend, well, a kid brother actually on this journey of the 8 runs, who is also brilliant running / training partner, that someone that's given me that spark back, to get my fitness levels back to where I was in 2012.

We've taken part in some of the runs together this year, which has been great! but, from the start of the year, when we started to run / train together, within this time, a brilliant friendship has been formed, to where they are pretty much family to me, well, pretty much like a kid brother to me (I'm the youngest of 4 and always wanted a kid brother) and that means a lot to me.

So, Elliot Martin, thank you for this last year, the support and everything, it's been greatly appreciated. Here's to the many more miles we have yet to cover :) I cannot thank you enough.

Another hightlight for me, was being interviewed live on BBC One during the coverage of the Great North Run! :) That was brilliant! You can view it here:

Last year, 2023, I ran a 10k, 6 half marathons and a 10 miler, raising funds for both Alzheimer’s Society and Macmillan Cancer Support.

The runs were for my Father, Collin, my Aunt - Ann Sutton (who lives in Perth, Australia), who both suffer from Alzheimer’s and Vascular Dementia. I also ran on behalf of one of my other best friend’s Fathers, John Tudor, who too suffers from Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

I ran in memory of a close friend's Mother - Ann Ratcliffe, who sadly passed away in 2022 from Dementia and in memory of one of my best friends, Simon Rogers, who also sadly passed away from Cancer in February 2022 (you are missed a great deal).

In 2020, after I was made redundant, I took upon the role of being my Father’s main carer until February 2022 before he had to go into a care home due to his condition worsening. Watching his condition deteriorate pretty much each day though hits hard. He can have a good day and a bad day where sometimes, he may not recognise me when I visit him, but other days, he will and say my name a few times, with a smile upon his face.

This time round though, I took part in the Great North Run (and the other 7) for my Father, Collin, in memory Ann Ratcliffe, and for my Aunt - Ann Sutton as well as one of my best friends Father's (who used to play for Newcastle United): John Tudor.

Sadly, my Mother has also now been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Vascular Dementia, this was confirmed back in March. Not great at all.

I honestly wish there was a cure for Alzheimer's / Dementia though. That is why, this time round, I have been raising funds for solely Alzheimer's Society this year. You can donate via my JustGiving page. Any amount is welcome.
