What's the challenge?
Tough Mudder, London South, 25th September 2022.
Many of you will have heard of the event (some may remember that this is not the first time for some of us...fools), but for the uninitiated amongst you...
Tough Mudder is an endurance event where the race participants attempt to traverse a 10-12 mile long course with military-style obstacle courses.
The course was originally designed by British Special Forces to test mental as well as physical strength. The obstacles that need to be overcome often play on human fears like fire, cold water, electric shocks and heights.
When you encounter the Everest, Artic Enema, Electric Shock Therapy, Funky Monkey, Electric Eel, Cliff Hanger, Dirty Ballerina, Fire Walker, Hanging Tough, Trench Warfare, and (my least favourite) Cry Baby, they remain forever etched on your memory.
The organizers of Tough Mudder encourage teamwork, and many of the obstacles are specifically designed to be very difficult or impossible to complete alone. Most teams consist of 5-10 people, and no-one gets left behind. The event is untimed. It's a challenge, not a race and success is best defined as completing the course in one piece, although there are guaranteed to be some scars, burns, shocks and emotional traumas along the way.
