Story
We are a church in Oxford, applying to the Home Office to help a refugee family fleeing conflict to build a new life here in the UK under the Community Sponsorship Scheme.
We formed a group to work on this in November 2021, following a church service which challenged us to respond in this very practical way. So far we have:
- Raised £5,500 towards our £30,000 target. This will furnish a home, fund intensive English language classes, interpreters, and the difference between Housing Benefit allowance and market rents in Oxford. The Home Office requires us to provide support to the family for 24 months before the Local Authority assumes responsbility.
- Begun planning how we will support a family for as long as they will need to become independent.
- Started the process to gain Council approval to apply to the Home Office.
- Received training on how to make an application to the Home Office, obtain housing, and benefits.
