The Burmese Rohingya Muslim’s are recognised as one of the world’s most persecuted minorities, stateless and living in constant fear. They reside in squalid make-shift camps on the border between Burma and Bangladesh, they are in desperate need of food, shelter and medical aid.
Since late August, the situation has worsened dramatically with violent clashes reportedly resulting in over 3,000 dead. The United Nations estimate More than 310,000 people have fled to Bangladesh in recent weeks, with more trapped on the border, amid reports of the burning of villages and extrajudicial killings. Most of the refugees are women and children.
Bangladesh already host to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who have fled previous outbreaks of violence in Rakhine. Existing refugee camps are full and the new arrivals are sleeping rough in whatever space they can find, Aid agencies say they are in desperate need of food, shelter and medical aid, and that current resources are inadequate.
