Story

As a family, we have been supported by LATCH from soon after Nath's diagnosis, where our world had fallen apart and we were given a brutal prognosis from the doctors.

We were introduced to Helen, our social worker who would become so important to us on our journey and who has been there for us, in so many ways, since Nath died.

LATCH are an incredible charity and helped us so much in practical ways (first off, giving Nath a iPad so he could play in bed when he was too ill to go into the play room) and holidays in Tenby to give us respite between stays in hospital.

Unfortunately, because of Covid, home support visits and bereaved families support groups haven't been allowed which has been hugely challenging but Helen has still supported us virtually.

We are so grateful for every single thing LATCH have done for us. Now we want to give back and help others. This particular campaign is a cause so close to our hearts because we spent so many days on Rainbow Ward; it became a second home, but it is in need of refurbishment. Occasionally we had to share a twin bedded room with another patient and their parent; this is very hard to do when you have two poorly children on chemo and you're sleeping next to them yet trying to be mindful of the other family going through the same thing behind the next curtain!

I've set myself the challenge of running or walking 5k, or thereabouts, every day in May. Sometimes it will be running, other days family walks, or just a stroll, depending on work and other commitments.

Nath never ceased to amaze us in his strength and courage and how he'd happily get out of his wheelchair, even when terminally ill, to play in a playground or with his sister. His ability of never moaning and just getting on with things was phenomenal so I want to honour that with this challenge.

Please donate what you can. Rainbow Ward, despite the fact there were so many sick children, was also a happy place and we have so many fond memories of times spent there.

Thank you.

Rainbow Ward is the Oncology Unit for children up to the age of thirteen based at the Childrens Hospital for Wales. It is a unique environment that hosts very special children and families. The entire ward is in need of much more than a facelift and simply isn't fit for the needs of today so weve got a mammoth task ahead with a complete redesign with a high spec finish and so many additions including ambient lighting and state of the art technology and much more. This will mean the world to families who will be able to have the most comfortable and enjoyable experiences possible during such emotional times. For every donation we receive, a child's handprint with your name on it will be added to a mural at the LATCH Home from Home Accommodation.
