OLYMPIC YEAR CHARITY CHALLENGE - Sports Relief
TOUGH MUDDER (Team - Mudder Fuggers)
Sport Relief takes place between 23rd-25th March, but you may have seen on the news, their campaign was launched recently and they’re aiming to raise £100m this year for good causes at home and abroad. They do fantastic work – for example:
-- 40p pays for a child in Uganda to be tested for the life-threatening disease malaria,
-- £1.50 could provide a young homeless person in the UK with a meal,
-- £17 could pay for someone in Africa with debilitating eye problems to have a cataract operation to cure their blindness,
-- £500 could provide a young carer in the UK with one-to-one support for a whole year.
In this Olympic year to celebrate the true spirit of sporting achievements and challenges, the team at Fitness First Paternoster Square want to do their bit for Sport Relief raising money for such fantastic causes.
We have therefore formed a team to compete in a truly awesome competition – Tough Mudder!
Renee Geoghegan, Vinny Durrant, James Woodcock, Phil Buckingham and Mike Mitchell will compete in the UK event on 12 May, which is an obstacle course of hardcore events that will test all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. The course is the toughest in the world! 10 miles of obstacles through electric fences, fire and anything that could cause pain!! Only the strongest will survive it!.....
We have set ourselves the target of raising £5,000.
Every week we will be posting our training schedule on the site and we really need support and encouragement to get us through the lead up and the event.
We ask kindly for people to put their hands in their pockets for an amazing cause...any donation will be very much appreciated.
You can even vote for who you think will win out of the team!
**** TRAINING UPDATE - WEEK 1, TRAINING STARTS! ***
Mike's report:
So, we've set ourselves the goal of specific training sessions (additional to anything else we may be doing) in order to attempt to mitigate the pain of the Tough Mudder on the day. The Mudder Fuggers' first training session started on 02 Feb with Renee announcing we'd be doing something called The Beast, a circuit of: Deadlifts x 9 (70kg m, 40kg f), atomic press ups x 12 (bodyweight), box jumps x 15 (bodyweight). Repeat until 15 mins of your life have elapsed. Sounds easy, doesn't it...?
Now, I don't know about you, but I don't think I've ever knowingly and repeatedly deadlifted my own bodyweight. The real beauty of this circuit was the delayed physical reaction I think we all experienced, which for me comprised a touch of soreness after one day, and total incapacitation the next. Here's what we all achieved. It's, er, just possible that you may spot a clear leader here....
James - 6 + deadlifts + 6 pressups
Mike - 5 + deadlifts + 1 pressup
Derek - 5 + deadlifts + pressups + 7 jumps
Renee - 10 on the nose
The great - and not at all terrible - news is that we'll be doing The Beast again as part of our training at some point in the near future. And again, multiple times, before the Tough Mudder on 12 May. Watch out for further updates very soon...
