We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

This page stopped taking donations on 22 June 2008, if you've arrived here after that date and would like to sponsor us please do so here - your kind donation will help more people survive cancer.

Yep we did it - we made it round in 47 minutes 18 seconds on such a hot and gloriously sunny day.  Bonnie wrote on her backsign "I Race for Life for me and all children with cancer.  They are very brave.  I beat my leukaemia hooray."  She did so well - I am so so proud of her!!

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who sponsored us

Bonnie's Story:

At the age of 4 i was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. My Mummy took me to the doctors because i had lots of bruises. They did a blood test, later that day they told Mummy and Daddy to get me to the hospital as quickly as possible because I was anaemic and they discovered i had leukaemia. The next day i had to get in a ambulance and they took me to a hospital called The Royal Marsden in Sutton where I stayed for about a month. I had to have lots of blood transfusions and lots of chemotherapy to help me get better and all my long curly hair fell out.  The needles hurt me very much, so they sent me to St Georges Hosptial to have a portacath put in my chest, I called it a wiggly, soon after that i came home. Every week i had to go to st peters hospital for an injection in my wiggly and every month i went to the Royal Marsden for something called a lumber puncher in my spine, it did not hert because i was given anasetic. A few years later i felt a bit better, i was able to run around and play games as i was not so weak. I finished my treatment 2 days before my 7th birthday last October. I have not got my port anymore because i had it taken out so i can run around as much as i like. I still go to St Peters for check ups every month. I still go to The Royal  Marsden too every 6 months. Soon my cancer will be all gone and one day there will be a cure for all cancer.  I race for life so that children will not have to suffer with cancer any more.

Claire's Story:

This is my 3rd year in a row for doing this and my inspiration continues to come from my eldest granddaughter, Bonnie who was diagnosed on 21 June 2005, at the age of only 4, with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.  She finished her maintenance treatment 2 days before her 7th Birthday last October and remains firmly in remission but will be closely monitored for a long while to come.  Bonnie has been amazing throughout her illness and her humour and zest for life has been truly inspiring.

I am eternally thankful to Cancer Research UK (their lifesaving research and trial for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) and taking part in Race for Life is my way of giving something back to them.  Bonnie will be taking part with me this year, how amazing is that!!

On 30 May 2004, my lifelong best friend Judith lost her short battle with cancer.  I was so fortunate in spending her last 4 months with her in Canada and miss her so much each and every single day.  Whenever I Race for Life it will always be in Loving Memory of Judith and in Celebration of Bonnie.
