Story
Im doing race for life on the 17th July with my mum, two sisters, boyfriends mum and sister. We are taking part in memory of my Nan who sadly passed away in November 2009 from stomach cancer. She had to have endoscopy, CT scan and x-rays to help find out why she was in so much pain. She was then diagnosed that same week with stomach cancer in September 2009.
She had two long months of trying to fight this terrible disease. Her consultant said that she could not have an operation as the cancer had got too big and it was too close to her other organs. Chemotherapy was not an option either as she was already bleeding and this would make it worst. She had radiotherapy which did shrink the cancer slightly but not enough and It was devastating when we were told that no other treatment would help her.
My Nan, Joan, was a very strong and brave lady who had suffered in the previous months of her being diagnosed.
She was in and out of hospitals having blood tranfusions as she was loosing too much blood, causing her alot of pain and unpleasantness. This shows how brave my Nan truely was!
With the help from macmillan nurses we found peace when my nan had passed away and we found that they were only a phone call away if we ever needed to talk. They were there during the time my Nan was diagnosed and helped in every way they could. Without this money these people would not be able to help as much as they did with us. So a big thank you is due to the macmillan nurses who helped and gave us the strength when needed before and after.
We are also entering this race for my boyfriends Mum, who has beaten cancer thanks to the help of treatment available to her and the encouragment from dedicated staff who have helped her through this tough time.
We are hoping to raise money for more research into this disease in order to help other people try to fight it. Hopefully if enough money is raised they can catch the cancerous growths alot earlier than they can now before they progress into a larger growth.
The more money we raise will hopefully mean that people will be able to beat cancer by scientists finding new ways and treatments to fight it.
