We help Ugandan children with disabilities to reach their true potential

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am fundraising for Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC) in Western Uganda, where I recently spent 2 months volunteering. They work to create equal opportunities for children with disabilities, offering rehabilitation, educational support, disability awareness projects, disability care education and training for healthcare and community workers, as well as entrepreneurship training to help mothers of children with disabilities lift themselves out of poverty.

They use a community-based rehabilitation approach across 7 districts of Western Uganda. Since 2014, more than 2900 children and 100 adults with a range of physical, intellectual and communication disabilities have received assessment, therapy intervention and adaptive equipment. This is how some of the donations will be spent:

1) Wheelchair for Ronnie

The first £100 raised will go towards a wheelchair for a young guy named Ronnie, who I had the pleasure of working with while at KCDC. Ronnie suffered from a spinal cord injury, leaving him with minimal movement in his arms and legs. His current wheelchair does not fit him, does not support his transfers and cannot fit in the car for long journeys to the hospital. The new wheelchair will give him the freedom he deserves, and help him continue on his rehabilitation journey.

2) 'Buckets of Love'

During the Covid 19 pandemic, lockdown has severely impacted people's livelihoods. This, coupled with inflation of food costs, has increased the risk of hunger and acute malnutrition, especially among those who already had feeding difficulties or recurrent infections as a result of their disability. KCDC is providing emergency nutrition, medication, education and therapy packs in a bucket, to help the most vulnerable through this difficult time.

3) Everything else KCDC!

KCDC does not receive any support from the government, and therefore relies on donations and grants to continue their amazing work. Without KCDC there would be no free support for children with disabilities and their families in Western Uganda. A high rate of disability, coupled with stigma and low income, means that KCDC is a lifeline for many families. Donating will allow them to continue to provide this invaluable support.
