Virtual 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon · 4 October 2020 ·
My name is Steve Montgomery (aka Rhino), I suffered a spinal cord injury (SCI) in 1996 after a fall from a ladder caused a burst fracture of a vertebra and bone fragments punctured my spinal cord. I had critical surgery the same day to remove the fragments and to stabilise my spine, but the resulting damage left me paralysed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. A SCI truly is a life changing event and there is no cure and typically very little improvement following the injury.
On Sunday 4th October, I will be undertaking the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon, and pushing the full marathon distance in my wheelchair to raise funds for Spinal research, the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop effective treatments for paralysis.
In order to keep fit I now regularly swim, hand-cycle, and I play Wheelchair Rugby with the Northampton Saints Wheelchair Rugby Club. I am also very proud that one of my teammates and our coach are also undertaking the marathon for other charities. This is going to be an immensely difficult personal challenge for me and it is likely to take around 10 hours to complete.
It is estimated that every day three people are told they will never walk again due to a spinal cord injury. Your donation will help find a cure that will change the lives of thousands of people living with the devastating effects of spinal cord injury. With everyone’s help we believe paralysis can be beaten, and even a small donation will help
Thank you in advance for any donations and please do try and share this page and help spread the word.
