Story
A former BTP officer and staff member of 42 years’ service passed away last week on the 21st September 2022. Richard (Dick Gill) was beloved by all those who worked with and knew him.
Dick was something of a history maker in BTP and believed to be the first black BTP officer to work on the London Underground. He dedicated over 42 years’ service as both a BTP police officer and more recently as a member of police staff, which was formally recognised in 2018 when he was awarded an MBE by her late majesty Queen Elizabeth.
Throughout his career, Dick was a pioneer for racial diversity, challenging prejudice in the policing sector and cultivating inclusivity in all areas.
Dick was famous for his choice of colourful socks to complement his immaculate business suits. He was so well presented that even in social situations you would struggle to find a crease on his clothing or scuff on his shoe!
Dick enjoyed an active social life with his wife Alyson in retirement and regularly travelled with her on adventures across the country and beyond. He was a great storyteller, confidant and friend often offering wise words to many and enjoyed doing so most over a glass of Aspall cider or Mount Gay rum.
Amongst his many talents, Dick was a renowned horticulturalist and would often bring plants to work to nurture and keep on his desk. His last plant remains at FHQ to this day and continues to thrive.
Dick being the person that he was elected not to have a funeral as he did not want a fuss made. Should anyone wish to pass on condolences please contact DI Paul Attwell who will ensure they are sent on to Dick’s wife Alyson and his family.
