In my 50th year I have decided to do something I have always wanted to do! Being averagely good at swimming,  cycling and running I will be taking on the South Cost Olympic Triathlon on 21st August 2021. A 1500m swim in the sea, 40k bike ride and a 10k run. 

My chosen charity is close to my heart as I am a swimmer and water polo player. All my boys have been through Broomgrove infant and junior School in Wivenhoe. Swimming is a life skill that every child should have the opportunity to gain. The school is lucky to have a swimming pool. However, the fact it is old, outside and costly to maintain has meant that it is hard to make viable and thus hard to offer the opportunity, to learn how to swim, to all children in our community.

THE PROJECT

The swimming pool

Currently the swimming pool is 14x8m above ground pool, with a steel and wood panel sides. The depth of the pool is a flat 84cm deep. This is heated with an old oil boiler and out of date filtration system which does not meet current standards for hiring out to the public.
The new pool will remain the same size of 14x8 m but will be dug out to leave around 1 ½ feet as a bench height around the pool. A new filtration system will be added to meet current regulations for hiring the pool to the general public. The old boiler will be replaced with a new energy efficient boiler/ Solar heating. The outside walls will be reinforced with concrete to expand it’s life expectancy. We will increase the depth of the pool, this will become a slopping pool from 0.8m at the shallow end to 1.2m at the deep end. We will then add new corner steps and underwater lighting.

The pool is currently an outdoor pool and is only used from May- July due to our lovely English weather conditions. We will add a dome over the pool. This will enable us to open the pool in all weather for 6-8 months of the year rather than 3 months, allowing us to spread the lessons out and also open spaces for other swimming lessons during the day. The structure would have sliding doors so in good weather could be opened out. The floor around the pool will be resurfaced with a non slip surface.

The changing rooms.

Currently we have 2 changing rooms (boys and girls) both of which house 1 toilet. Our project will re arrange the current building to make room for 1 girls, 1 boys and 1 disabled changing area. These will each have 1 toilet and an open changing area. These will lead out to the new under cover pool and back out onto the field for use during events. The toilets and changing area will have a complete refurbishment with improved lighting and ventilation. We will extend the building to house the new plant room.

Once this Project is complete the pool will not only be open to both the Infant and Junior Schools for swimming lessons, but we will also be able to offer afterschool lessons, private hire and public swimming session for the whole community. We have not work these details out yet but will keep you all informed.
