London Marathon 2017 · 23 April 2017 ·

For over 200 years the Reed’s Foundation has helped change the lives of over 12,000 vulnerable and disadvantaged children, not just by offering an excellent education to open up a bright new future, but - as importantly - by improving their pastoral, social and emotional well-being.

Story

42 years ago I left Reeds school with a brilliant education, never knowing that 10% of the other children were helped by the foundation.  Now that I am just in the process of retiring I wish to give back to society and my old school in particular.  This charity is what I call a "focused charity", all the money goes directly to the foundation for one purpose.  Their mission is to "help vulnerable children by providing a life-changing education at Reed’s School that will help to break the cycle of ‘family disadvantage’, inspire confidence and realise true potential through excellent educational provision and pastoral support".

Fortunately, I started running at 50(!) so have most of my joints in tact to run the London Marathon at 60.  I never did sports at school, using music lessons as an excuse, but after all these years I can now run for the school!

Here are some examples of how the foundation is helping/has helped.

Andrew started recently, a talented athlete, he has been brought up by his grandmother since the age of 3, as his mother suffers from long-term drug and alcohol addiction and his father is unknown, therefore, the pastoral care he receives at Reed’s is vital.

Patrick has been introduced to Reed’s via an inner city youth club; he is able and ambitious but lives in a part of London where prospects are limited and violence and gang culture have already affected his family. The opportunities offered to him at Reed’s to realise his potential will help change the course of his life.

Rahim has now graduated, but was given the chance to attend Reed’s as a political refugee from war torn Iran. After a very successful school career which included being School Captain, playing for the first teams in rugby and hockey and taking part in the Debating Society, Rahim went on to study law, gaining himself a place at magic circle law firm Clifford Chance. To quote Rahim: “My life and my achievements would not have been possible without Reed’s and without the Foundation.”
