Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have been helping the Alzheimer's society raise money for a couple of years now and believe it is really worthwhile. My grandmother (bless her) and now my mother have struggled with dementia reducing their ability to think, look after themselves and lead a normal life as they have got older. It has been difficult for all of us in my family to cope with this situation. My father has been doing a fantastic job of looking after Mum as the impact of her dementia gets steadily worse.
Dementia can start occurring in relatively early years in 50/60 year olds and can significantly reduce the quality of life of the individual and the carers over a long period of time. It has made me realise that there has been so much great effort by everyone to do research and bring new treatments for horrible deseases like cancer, heart desease and other physical illnesses, but relatively much less research for mental illnesses. Please can you help to redress this imbalance and invest in the mental health prospects of our older generation.
The London marathon is very emotiional for me, thinking about this as I cross the start line, and I hope I can make a small difference in the search for better care for dementia sufferers.
