Story
My Dad, David Ostler, loved walking. Whether it was on holidays to mountains or the coast, or just walking his dogs, as retirement approached walking was high on his agenda. Dad, and his brother John closed their Hardware shop, in Whittlesey, in September 2017 with. In 2019 Dad was diagnosed with a sarcoma in his foot and soon after had it amputated below the knee. But by Christmas, with the aid of a prosthetic, he was walking again - he had that determination. Unfortunately the amputation was not a cure, the cancer had already spread and while treatments kept it at bay, it never left. Dad died on the 17th May 2023.
Dad was born in Thorpe Hall back when it was a Maternity Hospital. Today it is a Sue Ryder's Thorpe hospice, and it is the place where Dad spent his last days. Before Dad's stay I had known what Sue Ryder do, but it is only when someone close to you needs the care that Sue Ryder provide that you realise just how important they are for everyone affected.
That is why I'm raising money for Sue Ryder. My target is £600 and could help fund another 24 hours of expert care so that someone can spend their final days in familiar surroundings, with treasured memories and their family.
And why am I running? Because I'm a cyclist not a runner (OK I ran a bit when I hit 40 pre-lock downs, but that's it). Just check my Strava and you'll see how bad I am at it. But I am training for it and I'll get round. If I can get under 2.5 hours I'll be happy, and if I get under 2 hours I'll be delighted...and the more money all you good people donate the more incentive I'll have!
