My story
This sponsored hike is in aid of Breakthrough Cancer Research, a charity that is incredibly important to me on a personal level. That's because I am a cancer survivor myself!
Back in 2015 I was diagnosed with lymphoma, and it was a terrible time for both me and my family. Thankfully the treatment for my type of cancer is well researched and effective, and after 6 months of chemo and a few weeks of radiotherapy I was declared free of the cancer.
However I know that not everyone is as lucky as me.
Too many families lose their loved ones to cancer. In my family we have lost my uncle to cancer, and we've also lost close family friends. And unfortunately our experience is the norm rather than the exception. Everyone knows somebody that's been touched by this dreadful disease.
And so clearly there's still lots of work left to do in researching and developing more treatments, in the hope of saving more lives and making more survivors like me!
About this event
In 2018 a small group of 20 volunteers in Salesforce hiked 18km from Crone Wood to Roundwood and raised approx €10,000.
In 2019 the Dublin employees went BIG! 150 people hiked the same route and raised over €30,000!
In 2020 we couldn't hike together due to the pandemic and had to scale right back in smaller fundraising events but still raised €25,000.
This year with restrictions lifting and vaccines on the way we are doing a number of smaller socially-distanced hikes with up to 15 people on each route.
I've chosen to join a group tackling Djouce Mountain in Co. Wicklow - and it's certainly going to be a challenge!
