Update 8th Sept - I made it! A Fantastic journey - read all about it on my blog http://richardwallington.blogspot.com/
The Lands End to John O'Groats ride is the ultimate British cycle adventure and a challenge which has for a long time held a strange(!) attraction. Seeing several friends battle with serious illnesses over recent years has given me the inspiration and motivation to get on with it and not put it off any longer. So here I am with under 3 months to go to my start date of 21st August! I'm hoping to do the total distance of 1,000 miles in 16 days, averaging around 65 miles per day. Training is going well so far, but there's a big difference when riding 16 days on the trot!
I will be raising funds for Parkinson's Disease Society as my father-in-law has suffered from this disease for a number of years now. A progressively degenerative and currently incurable disease, Parkinson's slowly robs people of their mobility, independence and dignity. It's difficult to see someone previously fit and powerful now struggle to do the basic daily things we all take for granted. Advances in medicine have made an important difference, but there's still a lot more to be done. Please help me raise as much as possible - it could be us in a few years time.
Thanks to all of you for your support; raising money, offering me a place to stay along the route, those who are riding sections with me, my parents for driving up to Scotland to support me, and especially my family who are putting up with my growing obsession and lengthening absences when out training.
See you in a 1,000 miles!! To view my route follow this link http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Lands-End-to-John-O-Groats
Update 21st July: Just over 4 weeks to go now, it's getting close!! Training still going well, I completed a ride of 156 miles over 2 days at the w/e and lived to tell the tale. Weather has been fairly rubbish during most of the training - it can only improve from here, can't it?? Over £1,500 raised so far - thanks very much everyone. It would be fantastic to make it to my target of £2,000 - the ultimate incentive to keep going when the body says No!
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Parkinson's Disease Society gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please sponsor me now! Thanks.
