100 years ago, soldiers returned from World War I blinded by the effects of mustard gas or shrapnel. Kent Association for the Blind was set up to support these war wounded soldiers - helping them to rehabilitate back into society. Today our work is needed more so than ever .
Only 4% of people who are registered sight impaired are completely blind, so we help people make the most of the sight they have. We can help with mobility training and advice on gadgets to make the simplest of tasks seems less difficult.
About 4 years ago I was diagnosed with glaucoma and I then knew why my eye sight was so bad. Within 6 months I stopped driving and was registered as Severely Sight Impaired (blind). Four years on I have no useable sight in my right eye and approximately 12% vision in my left eye. Adapting to sight loss has been hard and I have needed support from many people.
Kent Association for the Blind have always been there for me, they provide my white canes and have helped me with counselling. .
I am taking part in the Margate Superhero Run on Sunday 15th August to raise funds to support these fantastic people who have supported me over recent years
