Story
Borneo Orangutan Survival UK's mission:
Our mission is to engage supporters and donors from around the world with the plight of the Bornean Orangutan and share the work of the amazing staff at The BOS Foundation. All three species of orangutan are critically endangered, and a recent study estimated that over 100,000 orangutans have been killed in just the past 17 years as their forest home is logged and burned primarily for the production of palm oil. The only reaction to this shocking news is to do something, don't despair, act! Help us help them!
The Reason:
As many of you will be aware, our former colleague, Amy Winter, was involved in a fatal motorbike accident while holidaying in Portugal on April 17th, leaving everyone that ever had the privilege of meeting her shocked and deeply saddened. Amy was a cherished member of the Redrow team and was known for her colourful and adventurous character. She left Redrow to travel the world and in her 26 years it would be fair to say she probably saw more of it than many could hope for in a lifetime. Along the way, Amy worked at an Orangutan sanctuary in Borneo, building shelters for the Orangutans and caring for them during her stay, as well as raising funds for them after she left. Amy’s funeral is being held on the 30th May, and her family have suggested donations to this non-profit charity instead of flowers. We will be doing our ride in aid of Borneo Orangutan Survival UK.
The Event:
This Sunday, May 28th, Steve Kirk (Technical Wizard), Stuart Inskip (formerly of the Redrow Land department) & myself, will be taking part in the 2023 Ford Ride London-Essex for what will be the 10th anniversary of the world’s greatest cycling festival. The 100 mile distance is the longest in the Ride London programme and takes place on traffic-free, closed roads. Tower Bridge will once again provide the stunning backdrop to the finale of this year’s challenge. The route for 2023 will start from Victoria Embankment and head out of London past the Olympic Park and through the London boroughs of Westminster, City of London, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hackney, Waltham Forest and Redbridge, before heading out into Essex via Epping Forest. This circuit of Essex will see riders pass through some of the county’s most picturesque towns, villages and countryside , including Epping, Ongar, great Dunmow, Felsted and Writtle, with a section of the route a replica of the 2014 Tour de France stage that went through Essex and finished in central London.
Steve, Stuart and I last completed RideLondon in 2022, and Steve and I also did it in 2019. Both experiences were incredibly memorable. We raised over £2,000 in 2022, if we manage to get anywhere close to that this year it will be amazing!
