Story
My name is Jamie Owen and my friend Toby Hooper and I, are raising money for the CureCJD campaign in memory of my mum Lauren Owen. We will be cycling from London to Land's end over 4 days at the beginning of August. My mum was such an amazing person, who tragically died in May this year following her diagnosis in November 2021 with Sporadic CJD.
Sporadic CJD is a degenerative brain disorder caused by misfolded prion proteins, which destroy brain cells. The disease is rapidly progressive and leads to death usually within 1 year of onset of illness and often much sooner. Currently, CJD is responsible for 1 in 5000 deaths in the UK. The symptoms of CJD can include memory loss, changes in personality, loss of balance and coordination, slurred speech, vision issues, including blindness, abnormal movement, and progressive loss of brain function, and mobility. The causes of Sporadic CJD are still unknown and can attack anyone at any time.
Support us to find a cure for CJD. There is currently no cure but every day scientists and doctors are getting closer to finding a treatment. We aim to raise funds to support the use of an antibody-drug developed for the treatment of patients with CJD. The first patient was treated at UCLH in October 2018.
Although she might not have lived a full life she definitely lived every day to the fullest and completed so much in her short life. she is SUCH an inspiration to me and others and I will never forget her.
Any donation is massively appreciated!
Thank you for your support,
Jamie
