On the 28th of March 2017, our beautiful twins were born 10 weeks prematurely, over 300 miles away from home, requiring specialist hospital care until they were strong and well enough to come home. Thankfully, with the help of Lia's Wings (formerly Lucy Air Ambulance for Children), we were able to be transferred to a hospital closer to our home and be given the much-needed support from our family and friends.
Later that year, I sadly lost one of my closest friends, Emma, and then tragedy struck again four months later when my mam unexpectedly passed away. In 2019, after battling with my mental health for two years, I wanted to set myself a goal, do something that my mam and Emma would have never expected me to do, and at the same time, raise vital funds for an amazing charity.
To the astonishment of those who know me, having never run before in my life, I signed up for the Great North Run 2020. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the GNR was understandably cancelled and was replaced by the Virtual Great North Run.
I chose to do a 21km route around the village I live in and the neighboring town. With the support of friends and family cheering me along the way, I successfully completed the route in 1 hour 52 minutes and raised an amazing £1600 for Lucy Air Ambulance for Children.
Fast forward to 2023...
...Due to the economic downturn, Lia's Wings now, more than ever, requires vital funds to continue its amazing work. Having been unable to participate in GNR events since 2020 (due to injury and health reasons), I am reopening this page to finally complete my goal and smash the Great North Run!
So, this year, I will be taking part in the ACTUAL Great North Run (21k) in Gateshead and Newcastle. I trust that I will have the support of all my wonderful friends, family, and colleagues once again to help me along the way to complete yet another amazing personal challenge.
Any donations that you are able to give to support this wonderful charity, which is so close to our hearts, will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Rob
Lia's Wings, formerly known as Lucy Air Ambulance for Children, is the only charity in the UK that funds flights for children to hospitals by airplane. They exist to ensure children are able to access essential medical care regardless of distance.
The NHS has no dedicated funding for air transfers and so relies on Lia's Wings' support. They are trying to help as many families as possible but need your support to make these flights happen.
