What am I doing? On 1st July 2023, I'll be cycling both clockwise & anti clockwise around the Isle of Wight, totalling almost 140 miles (225km) and around 8,000 feet (2,500m) of elevation gain as part of the annual Brain Tumour Research Isle of Wight Randonnée in conjunction with British Cycling.
Why Brain Tumour Research? In August 2009 my dad, at the age of 64 was diagnosed with a 'grade 4 brain tumour' that was cancerous and growing aggressively. He was given up to 3 months to live without treatment. Being a grade 4 tumour there was no chance of a cure. He agreed to be treated with a new procedure that was in the final stages of research. This treatment, a chemical dye that helped surgeons by colouring cancerous cells, allowed him to live for another year. In November 2018 NICE recognised this treatment and is now available across the NHS. I'm proud of my dad and his bravery!
Brain Tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer, for more information about the charity go to www.braintumourresearch.org
