Why MND?
In December 2014 my wife and Will's Mum Kate lost her inevitable fight to MND at the age of 50. Currently there is no prevention, no treatment and no cure.
MND can affect any of us at any time of life. It robs us of our physical mobility, our ability to communicate and forces ourselves to be dependent upon others. In essence it robs us of our identity whilst we're forced to surrender ourselves to its effects. We need to find a cure.
For those of you who knew Kate doing nothing & just getting on with our lives was not an option . As we were not cyclists the inescapable logic of forming CycleForKate and 9 friends & family cycling 800 miles from Calais to Perpignan in the heat of July 2015 turned out to be another life changing moment - but a good one.
In 2018 a new team was established and the cycling adventure from Caen to Cannes with a detour up the mighty Mont Ventoux was successfully completed.
In 2021 Rob joined a team and cycled 1000 miles around Ireland in 10 days raising funds for MyNamesDoddieFoundation.
In July 2022 yet another new team was formed to cycle The Rockies from Calgary to Vancouver over 10 days.
And then in September Rob met up with the Great Rugby Cycle team to cycle the 700 hilly miles around the perimeter of Wales for MyNamesDoddieFoundation.
The team fully acknowledge that long distance cycling is not for everyone so for the last 7 years the annual Tour des Silos has been held with circular routes from Winchester RFC. 2022 was the 7th and final year with a nod to the Number 7 of the great Rob Burrow.
So 2023 sees the team tackle Robbie’s to Doddies; 460 miles between Winchester RFC and Melrose RFC where Doddie Weir started his rugby career. And on arrival in Melrose the team will then participate in “Doddies Ride” to hit the 500 + miles over the week.
We really appreciate all of your support in memory of Kate, Doddie and the entire MND families touched by this dreadful disease. Thank you.
