SSE Airtricity Dublin Half Marathon 2016 · 24 September 2016 ·

Anam Cara is a national organisation founded by bereaved parents. We provide a range of bereavement support services throughout the 32 counties. More importantly, we offer peer support and understanding to families who have experienced the death of a child. Each year in Ireland about two thousand families experience the death of a son or daughter. For some, the death may have been expected through illness or a life-limiting condition. For others, it was unexpected through stillbirth, an accident, suicide or substance abuse. Anam Cara’s online and face to face services are available to all parents regardless of age or circumstances of their child’s death and are available for as long as necessary. At Anam Cara we focus on the similarities of our loss rather than the differences and provide a level of support and understanding that others cannot offer. Our bereavement as parents unites us. Anam Cara currently has nine active local groups meeting regularly throughout the country. All Anam Cara services are offered free of charge to bereaved parents and families, and as we do not receive government funding, we rely heavily on public fundraising to fund the costs of our local groups and events. We are hugely grateful to any support you can give us. Thank you!

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, on behalf of Anam Cara.

I will be taking part in the Dublin City Half Marathon on September 24th, in support of and to raise awareness of the services offered by Anam Cara.

I became aware of the services of this organisation, when introduced to Sharon Vard - CEO of Anam Cara, at a former workplace in 2012. A truly energetic and inspiring women.

Why run a half marathon? Recently my current workplace ran a 'Health & Wellbeing Week' at which a mental health talk was delivered by the musician 'Bressie'. This talk gave me the push to challenge myself personally to run this race, but more importantly, to raise awareness of the important services offered by this valuable charity.

For many, bereavement is a difficult subject to discuss, and a challenging part of life to experience. Anam Cara is an all Ireland organisation providing online and face to face peer support services for bereaved parents and families who are in need. I feel we can all appreciate the services that his organisation has to offer. For more information about Anam Cara, I encourage you to visit their website https://anamcara.ie/ or feel free to contact me at any point.
