Ben’s miracle Recovery- covid-19
On 16th December 2020 Ben received the news that he was Positive with Covid-19, come Christmas Day he had deteriorated in health so much so, he was admitted to medway hospital. Sadly he was ventilated on 30th December and it was the worst start to the year 2021 for us all!
Ben was looked after by an incredible team at medway until the specialist team made the decision to contact
St. Thomas hospital as an attempt to save his life , St Thomas played an amazing role in collecting Ben from medway almost immediately and putting him on one of their ECMO machines. This allowed his lungs time to rest for recovery Ben was looked after so kindly & continuously spoken to by all of the nurses. They always found the time to make video calls to the family so they could speak to him most days in the hope that he could hear and continue to fight.
Sadly Ben didn’t show improvement & the family received a tough call to go and see him , With that in mind Leoni and his 3 girls Ellese 15, Lexie 14 & Maddie 9 never gave up hope! His family and friends were not wiling for this to be the end of ben either. We truly believe that with St Thomas allowing dan, leoni, kieran and gary the opportunity to see ben that day caused the miracle that happens next!
Ben fought hard , Within days he showed signs of improvement. From there his story was truly a miracle Within weeks he was off sedation, off the ECMO machine & the family were able to talk with him via video calls.
St Thomas pushed him everyday on his road to recovery. They were always attentive to Ben & his families needs. We are so proud of Ben & he really is our miracle of 2021.
We are so grateful for the NHS, that we want to show our appreciation to medway and st. Thomas hospital but especially to St Thomas hospital and the nurses and doctors who worked endless hours for keeping Ben alive & helping him fight Covid-19.
All money raised for St Thomas Hospital will go towards..... ECMO equipment, resources and training and more!!
There are five adult ECMO centres in the UK , two of which are in London and the others are based in Leicester, Manchester and Cambridge.
ECMO treatment temporarily replaces the work of the lungs or heart in patients with severe lung or heart failure, similar to dialysis for kidney failure, allowing their organs to heal. An ECMO machine continuously takes blood from the body, adds oxygen, removes carbon dioxide and then returns it to the body On average the cost of ECMO treatment per patient in England is £45,000.!!!
