Story

Thank you for visiting my page.  Please support me and The Amos Bursary to raise money to send 10 young men to work in New York over Summer 2014.

The Amos Bursary is a fantastic local charity with which I have had the pleasure of being involved for a couple of years.  I am proud to be one of the professional mentors and have seen first-hand, the difference the Bursary makes to the lives of those who participate in the scheme.

The money I raise will go to fund the exciting and innovative "New York Experience"

The New York Experience 2014

The Amos Bursary plans to send 10 young men between the ages of 18 to 21 to New York in August 2014 to gain valuable work and life skills.  This is a once in a life time opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in environments that differ from the UK. The experience will help enhance their CVs and build on their transferable skills; enhance personal development in terms of resourcefulness, flexibility and cultural awareness.

About the Bursary

Patrons: Baroness Amos, Baroness Rendell, Lord Alli, Michael Prest

The Amos Bursary helps academically able British young men of African and Caribbean heritage, from London’s inner city schools, to access professional careers. They prepare students for top universities, the world of work, and to become future leaders. Young men from these communities have been identified as the most underrepresented in higher education and in topflight professions. They are the least likely group to go to or stay at university regardless of academic ability due to financial constraints, lack of understanding of the system, limited tradition of participation in higher education and little knowledge of what is required at degree level.

The Bursary receives no government funds and its management and administration is conducted by a team of some 20 volunteers and 75 supporters providing professional services, and mentoring.

The positive effect on young lives

I mentor Ricky During:

“The Amos Bursary has transformed me from being a shy individual to being a more confident person.”

“Being an Amos Bursary student has been life changing for me, as it has enabled me to access a vast amount of opportunities that I otherwise would not have known about. These opportunities include networking events, attending conferences at universities, personal development workshops and the chance to work closely with Rob Grant. The Amos Bursary has transformed me from being a shy individual who rarely took part in group discussions, to being a more confident person, not afraid of public speaking and interacting with new people. I have also created strong bonds with fellow Bursary students and we support each other. I still have a long way to go, but I'm very grateful for where the Amos Bursary team have got me to so far.”

The positive effect on families

The Bursary can also positively impact the families of students. This is what the Bursary means to Ricky's mum, "I am incredibly proud of Ricky and feel positive about his future.  I have seen the transformation in him as he has become a distinguished young man. I am very happy that the opportunity was given to him and that he has become confident and responsible. I do hope the Amos Bursary will continue to help many more young people in society.”

Why I am running

By raising essential funds, we can make an impact on the lives of even more young disadvantaged boys and their families. I am passionate about encouraging greater diversity within the workplace. This can only ever be achieved if we support those who ordinarily find it difficult to break into certain professions.  The New York Experience will transofr the lives of 10 individuals and help break down cultural barriers.

Please support me and join me in setting these boys up for a successful and rewarding life, and help create a more harmonious society of which we can all be proud..
