Story

Dad sadly passed away on the 19th of May at the age of 74.

Throughout his life he was passionate about music, listening to it, performing it, composing it and inspiring others with his vast knowledge and love for all kinds of music. Dad had an ecclectic, eccentric taste in music, which inspired him, and all who came into contact with him.

Dad studied Music at Cardiff University, under Alun Hoddinot and went on to become a composer. He taught Music in secondary schools, and Further education colleges, making sure that he gave his students more than just the curriculum. Music for him was everywhere, for everyone. He worked tirelessly to give his students experiences with professional musicians, took students to concerts they may never had been to, and tried to make music as accessible as possible for his students.

As a family we wanted to reflect his love for music, and passion for sharing musical experiences, and inspiring others to play music, in the choice of charity. We’ve decided to raise money for Ty Cerdd, a national charity, based in Cardiff, who work closely with under represented communities in the arts, specifically making music accessible for all and supporting composers to create and collaborate to create new music. This for us seemed a perfect match to Dad’s passions for Music and Education.

Ty Cerdd are a charity which are there:

  • to protect the legacy of Welsh music of the past, to nurture Welsh music of the present, and drive the development of new composition.
  • to support professionals and non-professionals, performers and audiences, to perform, compose and experience Welsh music.
The kind donations, from his funeral, will help Ty Cerdd to create a series of workshops in his honour, combining Dad’s passion for music, composition and inspiring young people. We hope to enable groups of people who would not normaly have access to music workshops, to get the chance to play, to listen and to be inspired by all kinds of music.

He had such a passion for all kinds of music - Jazz, Classical, avant- garde and Opera, that we felt like sharing this with others was our way of sharing his love for music.

As a family, we would like to thank you for your kind words and support throughout this difficult time, and thank you for your donations in honour of Dad. The one and only Bob.

Bu farw Dad ar y 19eg o Fai yn 74.

Trwy gydol ei oes roedd ganddo angerdd dros gerddoriaeth; gwrando arno, ei berfformio, ei gyfansoddi ac ysbrydoli eraill gyda'i wybodaeth helaeth o'r pwnc. Roedd gan Dad chwaeth eclectig, ecsentrig mewn cerddoriaeth, a fu’n ysbrydoliaeth iddo, a phawb a ddaeth i gysylltiad ag e.

Astudiodd Dad gerddoriaeth ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, o dan arweiniad Alun Hoddinot ac aeth ymlaen i fod yn gyfansoddwr. Bu'n dysgu cerddoriaeth mewn ysgolion uwchradd ac mewn colegau addysg bellach ac uwch. Gweithiodd yn ddiflino i roi profiadau cyfoethogi i'w ddisgyblion a'i fyfyrwyr trwy weithio gyda cherddorion proffesiynol. Byddai'n aml yn mynd â nhw i gyngherddau ac roedd wedi ymrwymo i wneud cerddoriaeth mor hygyrch â phosib iddyn nhw.

Wrth ddewis elsuen, roeddem fel teulu am gofio ei gariad at gerddoriaeth, a'i angerdd am rannu profiadau cerddorol, ac ysbrydoli eraill i chwarae cerddoriaeth. Rydym wedi penderfynu codi arian ar gyfer Tŷ Cerdd, elusen genedlaethol, wedi'i lleoli yng Nghaerdydd, sy'n gweithio'n agos gyda chymunedau sy wedi’u tangynrychioli yn y celfyddydau, gan wneud cerddoriaeth yn hygyrch i bawb a chefnogi cyfansoddwyr i gydweithio i greu cerddoriaeth newydd. Dyma gyfuno felly cariad Dad at gerddoriaeth ac addysg.

Mae Tŷ Cerdd yn elusen sydd yn:

  • amddiffyn etifeddiaeth cerddoriaeth Gymreig y gorffennol, meithrin cerddoriaeth Gymreig gyfoes, a sbarduno datblygiad cyfansoddiadau newydd.
  • cefnogi gweithwyr proffesiynol a phobl nad ydynt yn weithwyr proffesiynol, perfformwyr a chynulleidfaoedd, i berfformio, cyfansoddi a phrofi cerddoriaeth Gymreig.
Bydd y rhoddion caredig, o’i angladd, yn helpu Tŷ Cerdd i greu cyfres o weithdai er anrhydedd iddo, gan gyfuno angerdd Dad dros gerddoriaeth, cyfansoddi ac ysbrydoli pobl ifanc. Rydym yn gobeithio galluogi grwpiau o bobl na fyddai fel rheol yn gallu mynychu gweithdai cerdd, i gael cyfle i chwarae, i wrando ac i gael eu hysbrydoli gan gerddoriaeth o bob math.

Roedd ganddo amrywiaeth eang o chwaeth mewn cerddoriaeth a oedd yn cynnwys jazz, clasurol, cyfoes ac avant-garde, roc a rôl ac opera.

Fel teulu, hoffem ddiolch i chi am eich geiriau caredig a'ch cefnogaeth trwy gydol yr amser anodd hwn, a diolch am eich rhoddion er cof am Dad. Yr unigryw Bob.
