In July 2014, our youngest daughter Romy was taken ill very suddenly and unexpectedly. We were taken to the wonderful Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton and then blue lighted all the way to King's College Hospital in London (please see separate JustGiving page) to be placed under the care of one of the country's best neurosurgeons. Unfortunately, the bleed to Romy's brain was so intense and severe that nothing could be done and she passed away on Friday 18th July 2014 at 4:15 pm.

In the two years since I lost my beautiful daughter I have often played over the events in my mind and thought of taking the time to track down members of that team and thank them personally. The thing is, the trauma of losing Romy so suddenly lead to my being diagnosed with PTSD, to the extent that I find any hospital difficult to enter. The thought of setting foot in the Royal Alex again is terrifying to me.

Recently, I saw an incredibly inspiring video post on Facebook showing a woman revisiting the medical team who had cared for her and her baby son after they were badly injured in a car crash in which her husband died. It made me think, once again, of visiting both hospitals, finding as many of the original team who cared for Romy as possible and thanking them in person.

Having a donation to hand over to them would give me the incentive I need to attempt to conquer this part of my PTSD, which has at times been crippling. 

Although our story does not have a happy ending, I feel passionately that medical professionals should be thanked; even when a child has died. We do not feel let down. We have never looked for someone to blame. In fact, we are still touched by the amount of love and care shown to us and to our daughter.

If I can raise £1000 for each of these two hospitals, I will visit both of them in person, track down as many of the individuals who helped Romy as I possibly can, and thank them, personally, from the bottom of my heart.

And I will video it for my blog in the hope that it may help and inspire others, and remind us all that nurses, doctors, paramedics, consultants and registrars - and many many others - are always deserving of our thanks for their efforts.

It would give me immense pleasure to be able to perform this small act of service to people who give so much for so many. It would also feel great to stick two fingers up to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
