I want to raise money for Fintan’s Fund by completing the Ring of Kerry this summer. During a tough year, this charity provided me with the opportunity to live a normal life and create good memories whilst going through chemotherapy. This is an amazing charity that has helped so many cancer patients, please help me by allowing them to continue to help other patients and their loved ones!

Fintan’s Fund is a local, volunteer-run charity that was established round the kitchen table in 2015. Our team was motivated to support young adults with cancer following the experience of their husband, brother, friend and team-mate Fintan Hillyard who was diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Melanoma after collapsing during a rugby game and passed away after two years of illness in December 2014 aged 29. During Fintan’s illness we realised the gap in cancer provisions for young adults who are beyond the provisions of teen services but feel isolated in the midst of adult care systems. A cancer diagnosis in a young adult can create precarity for a range of reasons: job insecurity, student debts, new mortgages or young children. We wanted to provide young adults with an opportunity to still feel young and carefree during their time with cancer. To do this, we provide tailor-made memory-making experiences. These can be a chance to take time out, chill and recoup or a chance to seek adventure and live in the moment with a thrill-seeking activity. We research and plan each experience in conjunction with the person to meet their needs and accommodate who they want to enjoy the experience with. 

These memories are entirely funded by donations and fundraising activities so we are thrilled Ronan has decided to take on the Ring of Kerry cycling challenge. We can’t change the outcomes of people with cancer, but we can change how they think back on that time and aim to insert some positive experiences in a challenging period of life.
