I am running the London Marathon in October for 3 reasons.
One to run in memory of my father Herbert Lloyd Levy who passed away late December 2020.
The second reason is to raise the awareness of Diabetes. This was the condition my father had suffered from.
Its important to make others see what the effects/ causes and struggles sufferers have to go through on day to day basis. I will be aiming to raise £2,100 that can make a difference to research and development of diabetes.
The third reason was more for myself. To continue my running journey. From a different life style lead 3 or 4 years ago where i was going to the pub every weekend getting drunk and gained no benefit from. To now where running and exercise is my daily ritual. Atonement you could say.
My dads story
Herbert was a diabetes sufferer. Each day as he grew older it would be a more struggle. Having to manage several medications to control his levels such as sugar. Insulin playing a significant factor in his day to day injections.
There were times when his energy would go low and having to eat something sugary to bring these back up other wise he would be on borderline of passing out.
Not just his levels, it sometimes would have an effect on his moods.
Eventually this took its toll on his body with his kidneys shutting down.
What is diabetes ? What effects does it have on the body?
Diabetes, is a long lasting condition which causes the blood sugar levels to go too high.
“The amount of sugar in the blood is controlled by a hormone called insulin, which is produced by the pancreas (a gland behind the stomach).
When food is digested and enters your bloodstream, insulin moves glucose out of the blood and into cells, where it's broken down to produce energy.
However, if you have diabetes, your body is unable to break down glucose into energy. This is because there's either not enough insulin to move the glucose, or the insulin produced does not work properly.”
There are two types. Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 is managed by taking doses of insulin to control levels,
Type 2 is managed by medication, healthy eating and exercise.
What can you do about it ?
Your donation no matter what, can make a huge difference to one step closer to finding a solution and to make things easier for existing suffers.
What am i going to be doing over the next few months?
In terms of training and events, i am already going to be running two marathons. Brighton Marathon in April and then the Edinburgh one in May. Crazy i know, but it has to be done. The pain and suffering will be worth it if i can make a difference.
Training wise i will be working as hard as i can to get to that finish line. Long runs and plenty of gym work. I will be publishing some of my workouts and events that will suppliment the London Marathon in the upcoming months.
