Story
Hey everyone,
Having just left school, and currently on my gap year, I realise how fortunate I've been with my education so far. Consequently, I have chosen to work at Mvumi School, Tanzania, for three months and to assist the students' education in any way that I can. With the aim of raising funds for the school, I plan to cycle roughly 1,700 miles with my twin brother, Lewis, 'in the footsteps' of Alexander the Great around modern-day Turkey (from the historic site of the Battle of the Granicus to the Battle of the Issus). The idea for this trip - starting in early May and taking approximately 40 days -stemmed from my interest in Classics that I picked up at school, and we hope it will raise as much money as possible for the Mvumi School Trust.
Founded in 1994, Mvumi School is a High School located rurally in the central region of Tanzania and has drastically changed local children's lives by means of education. The Mvumi School Trust's sole aim is to support the teachers and students of Mvumi School, thus enabling the school to continue to provide young Tanzanians with the opportunities that a good education provides. Currently, there are 477 students at the school, who are spread out across six forms. Both day-students and boarders are catered for. Additionally, in January 2011, Mvumi School accepted its first blind students and the special resource unit for blind and severely visually impaired students, the ICAP, has successfully continued to expand.
The cost of sponsoring a child for his/her six years at Mvumi is £3,250 for a boarder and £2000 for a day-student. If we reach our target (£7500), we hope to be able to sponsor one boarder and one day-student so that they can enjoy the benefits of a Mvumi education. In addition to this, the school desperately needs up-to-date books to improve the students' education. This will be the second source of any donations that we receive.
Any donation, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated and will help to make a difference to the lives of the students at Mvumi. Of course, if you were feeling ultra-generous you could sponsor us per mile of our bike trip!
Thanks for taking the time to read this far, and many thanks in advance for all of your support. Please feel free to send a link of this page to any friends or family who you think might be interested.
Lastly, I would just like to say a huge thank you to the generosity of the John Peake Award committee and its donors, with whose help I have been able to attempt this trip.
Wishing you all a brilliant 2012!!
Best wishes,
Rory Sullivan
