Rory's 10k run · 4 March 2021

Books2Africa is a UK charity that collects and sends donated books to increase the quality of education in Africa by helping individuals and communities to access, read, and understand books, and to extend the life and impact of books by decreasing book waste and increasing book readcycling.

Story

On World Book Day (4th March) Rory has chosen to run 10km to raise money to help Kenneth (one of our Project Leaders at The Huracan Foundation) set up a library in a remote school in rural Uganda.

St Jude's Primary School in Muwangi is 11km from the nearest road and the children have very little access to books. The literacy rate is very low and the school’s dropout rate is approximately 70%.

Without being able to read, many of the children loose self esteem and confidence and leave school early, with many marrying and having children very young as they lack role models in the community.

With the funds Rory raises, the wonderful charity Books 2 Africa will be able to ship over 1,000 books to Kenneth’s school, allowing him to set up a library for the children.

Rory has been busy training during lockdown (even in the snow!) and would really appreciate any support you can give him to help Kenneth set up the library.

The children (aged approx. 7-13) are so excited about this opportunity. As you’ll see from a couple of their letters, they all dream to do so much more! Do watch this short video here which shows where the library will be set up once the books arrive - https://youtu.be/4gqgyjDDvWU

Kenneth himself spent a large part of his childhood in a camp for internally displaced people in the north of the country but he started reading from an early age and understands the absolute importance of books for his pupils. He is a wonderfully inspirational teacher and the children are very lucky to have him in their school.

If you have a minute, do please read Ken’s story here that tells you a little more about the struggles he has faced and why he feels to inspired to help the children in his community.
