Older people in Buckinghamshire have endured months of isolation and loneliness and Age UK Bucks (AUKB) really makes a difference to many by providing a regular point of contact. For many it is going to be a challenge to bounce back to anything like normal life but AUKB is determined to support that happening and relies on donations to keep going.
Pete and I are undertaking this 84 mile trek between Wallsend and Bowness-on Solway, following the line of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, and want to use this experience to focus some interest in raising funds for AUKB.
The literature says that anyone who is reasonably fit can walk the Hadrian’s Wall Path and the route is relatively easy so we are hoping that this is the case! Nonetheless, we have been training in the Chilterns and believe that our local hills will prepare us well for the most difficult section of the wall between Chollerford and Birdoswald, which has lots of short climbs and descents.
We have decided to walk West to East and have managed to book our bed and breakfast along the way and, COVID regulations permitting, we are hoping that coffee shops, pubs and restaurants will provide the sustenance to keep us going. I love being in the countryside and I’m told that it is very beautiful on the route and there are a number of museums along the way to keep Pete interested too.
