I am raising money for Refugee Youth Project which is a voluntary organisation that provides support and activities for young refugees and asylum seekers. The organisation is run by a committed group of volunteers and has projects in London, Lebanon and Nepal. Following a political crisis in Bhutan in 1990, many southern Bhutanese of Nepali origin were forcefully evicted from their homeland and arrived in Nepal. Due to a lack of health services, sanitation, proper food and water, many children and adults died of diseases. By 1992 - 1993, the UN Refugee Agency began working to construct camps for the refugees. It has now been over one and a half decades since the refugee crisis, and the refugees are still living in seven UNHCR-administered refugee camps in eastern Nepal. There are currently 109,311 registered Bhutanese refugees in Nepal (RCU November 2007). Amongst the total refugee population there are 37,241 children (BRCF Central Office Report, December 2006). Previous research by Refugee Youth Project has identified the most vulnerable children in these camps. In November 2009 I am going to Nepal to help run support and education groups for these children. Both me and my dad Geoff are doing the ’Great East Swim’ which is a mile open water swim on 26th September 2009.Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
