Story
Cancer affects everybody. 1 in 3 people in the UK will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime. For me personally I have lost 3 family members to the disease in the last 18 months alone and many of my friends and family are dealing with cancer on a daily basis whether it be supporting a sufferer or dealing with grief of losing a loved one.
Around 8000 people in the UK are diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer each year. Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all cancers because it is both difficult to detect and treat. Because pancreatic cancer causes few symptoms in its early stages, the condition is often not diagnosed until the cancer is relatively advanced. Surgery to remove the tumour is usually the only way to completely cure pancreatic cancer but this is a suitable treatment for only around 15 to 20% of patients.
In November 2012 we very sadly lost my much loved uncle to this awful disease after only just over six months of fighting the disease. He was as humorous and strong minded in his fight as he was in everyday life and he is terribly missed.
In 2005 Bob helped organise work experience for me in the Sports department at Bristol Univertsity, while I was there we participated in a number of healthy heart fitness classes together (another cause which has affected our family profusely). This experience only highlighted my love of healthy living and encouraged my decision to study for a degree in sports science.
Although I've never really been a runner since moving to Sydney 18 months ago I try to get out for an early morning coastal run everyday (I think the view helps) although this will be my first run over 10k! I'm hoping the beautiful scenery around the course and the thought of helping even a fraction to beat cancer will get me through the 13 miles!
Please donate anything you can afford to help this very worthwhile cause which is extremely close to my heart!
