Helen & Douglas House helps local families cope with the challenges of looking after a terminally ill baby or child who will die prematurely. We are a home from home for our patients and their families, and provide round-the-clock care in a warm, loving environment.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Some of you may already know that my little 5 year old nephew Ollie,  was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in December.  He wasn’t expected to make Christmas, but he was a real fighter and only gave into this terrible disease on Sunday 27th February, just a day before his 6th birthday.

During his last few months he was looked after by the amazing people at Helen & Douglas House Hospice in Oxford, where the whole family was cared for.  They always made us really welcome every time we visited and the atmosphere is really positive and happy.

Helen & Douglas House is a registered charity providing respite, emergency and end of life care for children and young adults with life-shortening conditions, as well as help and support for the whole family.  The two hospice houses are bright, vibrant and positive places where the emphasis is on living life to the full, even when that life may be short.

We cannot thank the staff and volunteers at Helen House enough, for making Ollie's last few months as comfortable as possible, keeping his Mummy, Daddy and older brother Alfie well looked after, and for helping make some of his wishes come true; namely;

Seeing his parents get married - A wedding was organised in just over a week and was held in the Convent Chapel, in the grounds of the Hospice. A wonderful day for all the family and friends.

A trip to see Tottenham Hotspur train on their home ground (sadly, Ollie was not well enough to go, but his older brother and Daddy went and brought him back lots of pictures and momentos).

A visit from Ollies favourite band ONE DIRECTION.  The boys came to see Ollie at home (on their day off) and played on the Wii; played football with his older brother Alfie, and sang Ollies favourite song 'That's what makes you beautiful' to the family.  (Ollie's Mum was slightly starstruck and it was great to see pictures of her laughing like a school girl again!)

What we can do for Helen & Douglas House is to ensure that Ollie's legacy is to help them continue with the amazing work they do for families like ours and to that end we want to raise as much money as possible to help them carry on that work.

It costs over £4m per annum to run the two houses, so as you can imagine, every single penny counts.
