Story

I am working with a group of 20 young people who live in one of the poorest (but wonderful in many ways ) places on the planet Sierra Leone.  These children are hugely disadvantaged even within this poor country as they live on the dump in Freetown and many do not/ have not gone to school.

Rubbish Science workshops are 3 days of intensive scientific problem-solving strategies. We look at how we can create a degree of health, water and food security using only Rubbish available and the problem-solving skills that we teach them.

So kids make fly and mosquito traps out of plastic bottles. Grow plants in plastic bottle hydroponic systems. Make compost, solar stills and create things that are genuinely useful. Possibly more important than that though are the transferable skills as they tinker, modify and evaluate their designs in order to optimise them.

What will your money go on?  To provide equipment such as scissors, tools, seeds but also to pay for food and drink and anything that may support these kids to develop things in the future. All money will go to support the project and kids also buying footballs etc for them. None of iyour money goes to pay for admin fees or salaries. Accommodation is provided by Ross Cawthorne an ex student of mine.  Flights are covered by a donation from Le Rosey School in Switzerland where students will undertake the same challenges in a Rubbish Science workshop there. Please contact us if your school would like to get involved.

Updates of what your money has done will be shown on twitter @RubbishScience our  Facebook page and Instagram.

Any additional money raised will be spent on projects with Orphans in Vietnam and street kids in Kenya.
