London Landmarks Half Marathon 2023 · 2 April 2023 ·
On 20th August 2022 my friend Beth died from septic shock. In her memory, myself and the other members of Team Beth will be running the London Landmarks Half Marathon on 2nd April 2023 for the UK Sepsis Trust in their goal of ending preventable deaths from sepsis.
I met Beth as a rower in Grey College Boat Club and to me she remains inexorably tied to physical training, resilience and determination. I arrived at GCBC with an almost total aversion to organised sports and fear of physical activity but then I met Beth. Someone who exemplified a different sort of athleticism - hard work (in this case rowing) for the joy of the thing, and if not that then to support your teammates and if not that then (frankly) sometimes just to get the job done… whether it took hair ribbons, tequila or sheer bloody-mindedness. Even at her most competitive, Beth championed knowing that you were always more than the race result and she would have your back, whatever happened.
I cannot really think of a better way to honour her than a test of physical endurance, a minor offering to my friend who never shied away from a new challenge and I’ll miss her every step.
Thank you so much in advance for donating whatever you can.
