Story

We are deep into a Climate Emergency which needs solving now. It is a double-sided coin where we are producing too much CO2 and destroying the natural environment.

This needs to change.

The UK has become a country with one of the lowest levels of woodland cover in Europe. It is also one of the most nature depleted countries in the world.

Why are trees so important?

Trees are essential to people, wildlife and the environment. They clean the air we breathe, cool our cities, purify our water, provide homes for wildlife and provide a natural solution against climate change. Yet the
damage done to them has now reached catastrophic levels, and our plant and animal species are declining at an alarming rate. Just 13% of the UK is covered with trees. That’s low compared to the average European country that has 37% woodland cover.

Trees are warriors in the fight against climate change

  • 400+ tonnes per hectare – that’s how much carbon a young wood can lock up in its trees, roots and soils.
  • Trees cut outdoor and indoor air pollution by 50%.
  • Trees provide vital homes for wildlife threatened by habitat loss.
  • Trees shade buildings, reducing the need for fossil fuel-hungry air conditioning.
  • Trees help clean and cool the air we breathe.
  • Trees help our soils absorb water and can slow the flow of floods.

The impacts of climate change

Climate change is the biggest long-term threat faced by our natural environment and ecosystems, and thus our own life support systems. We are already seeing signs of long-term changes in weather patterns and an increase in extreme weather events such as droughts, fires, floods and storms. In recent years we have seen an increase in climate-induced catastrophes affecting people and wildlife around the globe

My Challenge

Starting on Saturday 29th August until Sunday 6th September I will attempt to run 9 marathons in 9 days, and between now and then encourage other people to join me on this challenge in their own way, physically or virtually undertaking any distance they feel comfortable with. Whilst at the same time organise a Team Relay Marathon, where if you cannot run a whole marathon, do it as a team.

I will be undertaking the event in the local parks in London because after Covid-19 it is more important than ever to be in touch with nature and admire the natural beauty for your body and soul.
