3 LETTERS THAT CHANGE PEOPLES LIVES FOREVER - M.N.D
Myself, my ikle sis, Laura and bro Graeme will be running the Bupa Great Manchester run on the 18th May 2014. This is a very poignant date for us as the run is the day after the two year anniversary of Dad’s passing.
Dad was diagnosed with M.N.D (motor neurone disease) on the 9th April 2011. He had had a couple of trips and falls and had to sit down when walking home from work so went to the doctors. He had tests and the doctors thought he may have suffered a small stroke.
Dad who had been a very active and super healthy, clean living chap very quickly was unable to do the things we all take for granted, driving, washing himself and making food to eat.
After a number of tests, the doctors confirmed our worst fears, that Dad had M.N.D.
At this time, the prognosis for M.N.D sufferers is beyond bleak, there is no cure, no treatment, NO HOPE! The bodies electrics stop sending signals from the brain to the muscles causing wastage, loss of speech, breathing and swallowing. Dads body slowly shut down around him leaving a healthy brain trapped in a non functioning shell only able to communicate by blinking, once for yes, twice for no.
As long as he could, Dad remained positive and embraced everyday. We had many happy events and family days out for which we all have lasting memories of our last year together.
Dad was set free on the 17th May 2012 at the age of 64 leaving a big hole in all our lives.
The reason you may not know anybody with M.N.D is that 50% of suffers will die within a year of symptoms starting. The other 50% will die within 3-5 years.
This statistic needs to change!!!
By taking part in this run, we hope to raise awareness of this rare disease and much needed money to put towards research so that future sufferers can be offered that 4 letter word....HOPE.
We have been training our socks of for this and hope that you can dig deep and give as much as you can afford towards the M.N.D.A who as well as trying to find a cure, provide help and support to sufferers and their families throughout the UK.
Thank you, Ian and family.
Motor Neurone Disease is a Fatal, rapidly progressive disease that can affect ANY adult at ANY time.
It attacks the nerves that control movement, people can still think and feel just like normal but their muscles refuse to work.
It can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, walk, talk and eventually breathe.
5 people die every day in the UK from MND.
There are around 5,000 people living with MND, in the UK, at any one time.
There is currently No diagnostic test...No effective treatment....and NO CURE.
Any amount of money you can spare will be massively appreciated!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
