Jack's Run for Research

Paris Marathon 2020 · 18 October 2020 ·
On Sunday 5th April 2020 Jack will be running the Paris Marathon for the Charlie Gard Foundation. Here is Jack's story:
"Through training I have now realised how foolish a decision that was. However, to justify this decision I have decided to raise money for a very worthy cause. In Nottingham I was fortunate enough to live next door to Colin and Joanna Wells. As my brothers and I grew older, Colin and Joanna became incredible influences and have always been there to provide laughter and support, in whatever circumstances.
We have also had the pleasure of getting to know their two wonderful children, Jojo and Rachael, who have demonstrated the same humour and wit as their parents as they have grown into remarkable adults.
When Rachael was 7 she suddenly became deaf and was demonstrably weaker than others of her age. After years of testing she was finally diagnosed with mitochondrial disorder RRM2B at the age of 15. She now has bilateral cochlear implants, she uses an electrical wheelchair, she's fed parentally and is ventilated at night. Her brother Jojo was diagnosed with the same condition at the age of 12.
Despite being told that the condition will lead to continuing deterioration, there is still hope through the progress made by charitable foundations. Treatments are currently in development to help give people affected by this condition the strength to keep fighting. There are also innovative new treatments being developed worldwide that continue to offer opportunities for people like Rachael and Jojo. However, without funding for travel, accommodation and treatments, Rachael and Jojo would be unable to receive the benefits that these treatments may offer.
The ability to run a marathon, whilst foolish, is a privilege. If I am able to show even some of the motivation and courage that Colin and Joanna's family demonstrate every day, then I will hopefully be able to make it around. However, if you are able to give generously to make this experience all the more worthwhile, then it won't be just a knee-breaking experience for me, but something far more valuable.
Please give generously.
Thank you."
