What am I doing? And why?

I am running London Marathon 2022 to raise money for The Lullaby Trust. 

My wife and I became parents for the first time in October 2020. Our son, Ralph, was born happy and healthy. He was cute, with brown hair, long fingers, and skinny legs. Ralphie (as we soon began to call him) enjoyed long walks and spending time in pubs, and had a huge appetite from the day he arrived. 

Tragically, Ralphie died - suddenly and unexpectedly - the following month. He was six weeks old. 

Six weeks is 42 days. The length of a marathon is 26.2 miles, or 42 kilometres. Thus, each kilometre I run will represent a day of Ralphie’s life. 

In doing so, I will raise money for The Lullaby Trust, who provided help and support  — through their helpline for bereaved families — to me and my wife and our families in the weeks and months after Ralphie’s death.

What is The Lullaby Trust?

The Lullaby Trust is a charity that saves babies’ lives and supports bereaved families. 

Around 4 babies a week die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in the UK and The Lullaby Trust is committed to bringing that number down to zero.

Through educating parents on how they can reduce the risk of SIDS, the Trust has played a key role in reducing the number of babies who die from SIDS by 80% since 1991, saving the lives of more than 20,000 babies.

In 2021, the Trust trained 1,484 health professionals to support parents in sleeping their baby safely; provided support to 1,080 bereaved families, including through a helpline run by volunteers; and, allocated a Befriender to 53 bereaved families to offer peer-to-peer support.

And it relies on donations to do all of this work, and more.

What does your donation pay for?

- £25 could pay for 7 Safer Sleep for Babies Guides for parents.

- £50 could pay for our bereavement helpline to support 2 first-time callers.

- £100 could pay to train 3 health professionals in safer sleep advice.
