London Marathon 2018 · 22 April 2018 ·

We have an intrepid group of runners that will be taking on the Virgin Money London Marathon 2018 to raise vital funds for Spinal Research.

Story

In 2012 my dad, Kevin, went from going about his normal daily business (mainly to Bees Motors of course) to being paralysed in 6 weeks. This was down to the 'C' word in the form of a tumour in his spine which is incredibly important to cure also but the biggest thing for my family and I to overcome was the daily life challenges we and he faced by not being able to stand, walk or even sit easily again. Imagine the simplist of tasks that you wouldn't be able to do alone and we all know he would happily make us all cups of tea, grab a beer from the fridge or get stuck into tweaking his racing car. All things he could no longer do.

Unfortunately 18 months later at Christmas in 2013  we lost him on 27th December.

My mum and I started running when he got ill and I would like to really challenge myself to raise as much money as possible to help research so that one day these super clever scientists can work out a way to cure paralysis and maybe even bypass the spine. Then maybe despite whether it's cancer, other illnesses or accidents people can have as much of their freedom and dignity as possible to continue the things that make life worth living.

Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop effective treatments for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury. Every year 1,000 people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed following an injury to their spinal cord. We receive no government funding and rely entirely on the support of the public to raise funds for our research. Because of the efforts of our supporters, we have funded innovative medical research that has achieved a number of ground breaking changes in the field.
