Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My name is Shantelle Gaston-Hird and I am a retro runner. This simply means that I run backwards. I also run marathons, ultramarathons and middle distance triathlons and use retro running as injury prevention and cross-training exercise. I used to be the Guinness World Record holder for the fastest female to run a half marathon backwards. I am taking part in the Manchester Half Marathon on Sunday 13th October to attempt the world record again. This is going to be a tough challenge to complete so any support in sponsoring me will give me extra motivation.

Each time I have raced retro running style I have always represented a bullying charity. Bullying is hugely linked to mental health issues. My goal with retro running, apart from being incredible for your fitness, is to show others that it is ok to stand out from the crowd. No one should be made to feel less special because they are not 'normal'. This is incredibly important to send this message to young people. We all go through a time in our life where we feel awkward in ourselves and I want to show others it doesn't mean there is something wrong with you. I am working with Young Minds as I think mental health is something we all need to learn more about. This charity supports young people and gives them the tools that they need to help them manage their mental health. If we can teach people younger and they build up more confidence within themselves imagine what they can achieve in their lives.
