Story
Rod was an inspiration to everyone around him. His positive outlook and infectious sense of humour never wavering throughout his courageous battle with Multiple System Atrophy. Diagnosed at the young age of 52, MSA rapidly took hold, creating daily challenges for Rod and all of us around him. Maintaining as full a life as possible was our absolute priority, Rod’s active mind enjoyed getting out and about, live music, visiting friends and therapy sessions. Eventually all of these activities became impossible. Our only hope of continuing to step outside the home was a customised electric standing wheelchair. After a thrilling demonstration we ordered the wheelchair and set about fundraising for the full cost £13400. Keeprodrockin was hatched and alongside over 200 amazing supporters, our numerous challenges smashed it, in just 12 months. The support from all over the world was truly inspiring, keeping up with all the messages, photos, videos, radio interviews, TV interviews, musical celebrations and pure enthusiasm meant so much to Rod and Team Thomson. The standing wheelchair had so many benefits, it allowed Rod to rest frequently, a necessity as tiredness is a huge part of MSA. Standing regularly helped maintain the many functions of the body together with active therapy sessions. Raising Rod’s self esteem also helped maintain his positive outlook. The customised wheelchair was an absolute life changer for us. Rod’s battle with MSA was cruelly ended by Covid in February 2021, three days after his 57th birthday. His courage truly inspired so many friends, family and Rockers. Keeprodrockin is now taking on a new role. Our passion to support people with MSA will be channelled towards raising funds for life changing mobility aids. News of new challenges and activities will follow soon and together we really can make a difference to people suffering with this cruel condition.
