Story
On the 28th February, 2014, I suffered the worst sporting injury of my life, while escorting 86 school pupils on a ski course in Switzerland. Having suffered ruptured anterior cruciate ligament damage, and ruptured medial ligament damage, I received extensive surgery on the injured knee, and embarked on a period of rehabilitation that would see out the remaining part of the academic year.
Needless to say, it was a very frustrating period of time, and, on occasions, I felt quite sorry for myself.
During this period, however, I received the very sad news that Amy Westlake, a former pupil at Cowbridge Comprehensive School, who I had taught during key stage three, four and five, had past away, having suffered from Sarcoma.
This news made me acutely aware that the resilience of others in the face of adversity far outweighed my own. So, to show my respect for Amy, and other young people suffering with Sarcoma, I told myself to 'man up' and aspire to push my body towards full fitness, and further beyond its limits.
With the help of another former pupil, and now valued friend, Oliver Trotman, I set about preparing to complete a challenge that has always seemed beyond me: run the distance that lies between my own front door and the gates of Cowbridge School: the door to door challenge.
The route will take me beyond the official marathon distance, and test my physical and mental determination to cross the line.
Please help me support Sarcoma UK.
