26 years ago Dad and I watched my inspiring Aunty complete her first London Marathon. As she crossed the finish line, Dad turned to me and said "let's do that together, one day".
I didn't run, Dad didn't run. But we'd do it "one day".
Sometimes, you lose your "one day". You take for granted that your "one day" will come, and then realise you've missed your chance. Dad can't walk now, never mind run (he's probably relieved about this, to be honest!). But I can. So I'm going to run this on my own, for Dad, and to raise as much money as I can for UKSCF. Why them? Because they are the only people whose research offers the real chance of people like my Dad being able to walk again. Maybe too late for Dad, but not for somebody else. Remember the story of the paralysed Bulgarian man who walked? http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/oct/21/paralysed-darek-fidyka-pioneering-surgery. That research was partly funded by UKSCF. By supporting me, that's the work that you'd be helping to make happen. What a difference that could make to someone's life!
So-please help me make the hours spent away from my children, out in the cold, pounding the streets of South London worthwhile. PLEASE sponsor me whatever you can. Every little bit makes a difference-to me, to Dad, and for the future. On a personal note, I need your support to get me round! Distance running HURTS and it's BORING and you want to STOP. Your sponsorship will keep me going! So I can keep my side of the promise, and it won't just be "one day".
