Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have worked for the Stroke Association for over 9 years so I have seen firsthand what an amazing charity it is. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that the general public are not aware of. Stroke needs more recognition in the charity world. A stroke is the fourth single largest cause of death in the UK and second in the world.
2017 will be my 10th year working for the Stroke Association and I will be marking it by doing something special..... the London Marathon!
Stroke occurs approximately 152,000 times in a year in the UK; that is one every 3 minutes and 27 seconds.
Stroke kills twice as many women as breast cancer and more
men than prostate and testicular cancer combined a year.
Stroke is one of the largest causes of disability – half of all
stroke survivors have a disability.
For every cancer patient living in the UK, £241 is spent each year on medical research, compared with just £48 a year for every stroke patient.
A stroke can happen to a child too and it is thought there are around 400 childhood strokes a year in the UK.
I have met many stroke survivors over the years and if you donate to this cause not only will you be contributing to much needed research you will also be supporting stroke survivors in some of the following ways: -
£10 could pay for specialist medical exercise balls which will strengthen a stroke survivors muscles and aid their recovery.
£20 could buy a set of specialist utensils, making it easier for a stroke survivor to eat with one hand and regain their independence or £20 could keep our helpline open for an hour, so we can provide emotional and practical support to all people affected by stroke (we support families and carers too).
£50 can help a stroke survivor modify their home by adding guard rails, so moving around their home becomes easier.
£150 can provide a life-changing 'life after stroke' grant.
£500 can buy digital voice recorders, laptops and specialist software. For people with aphasia, this equipment will make communication and everyday tasks, much easier.
£1000 could help fund a pioneering research project designed to improve understanding and treatment of aphasia, and the quality of people's lives after stroke.
