Every day in the UK, another 240 people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke. The Stroke Association is the only charity in the UK providing lifelong support for all stroke survivors and their families.

Story

When stroke strikes, part of your brain shuts down. And so does a part of you. Life changes instantly and recovery is tough. But the brain can adapt. Stroke Association's specialist support, research and campaigning are only possible with the courage and determination of the stroke community. With more donations and support from you, they can rebuild even more lives.

The University of Edinburgh has a long history of excellent stroke research that makes a real difference to patients and carers. We have several groupings who investigate different aspects of stroke:

- RUSH (Research to Understand Stroke due to Haemorrhage) is a research programme dedicated to improving the outcome for adults who have diseases that may cause, or have caused, stroke due to brain haemorrhage.  You can read more here: https://www.ed.ac.uk/clinical-brain-sciences/research/rush-research-group-overview/about-rush

- The Row Fogo Centre for Research into Ageing and the Brain aims to improve the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of Small Vessel Diseases, which are a major cause of stroke as well as cognitive decline, dementia and mobility problems. The Centre has been supported by generous donations from the Row Fogo Trust since 2011, and in 2022 received a donation £4M to extend its scope. - Within Row Fogo, Ellen is one of the study managers of the Rates Risks and Routes to Reduce Vascular Dementia (R4VaD) study which is funded by the Stroke Association, BHF, Alzheimer’s Society and DPUK and aims to determine the rates of post-stroke dementia and understand the mechanisms and risk factors. R4VaD has recruited 2442 stroke survivors at 53 hospitals across the UK, and the team will be sharing some of their results at ESOC later this month.

Our research teams comprise doctors, nurses, technicians, image analysts and other key research staff, and always work closely together with patients and carers. We are excited to be joining forces to take on the Edinburgh Half Marathon to raise funds to support Stroke Association's vital work.
