Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon 2023 · 14 May 2023 ·

The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon will take place on Sunday 14 May 2023 and has been inspired by former Leeds Rhinos captain, Kevin Sinfield OBE, and his fundraising challenges in recent years in support of his friend and team mate Rob Burrow.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

So I entered the Rob Burrow MND Leeds Marathon with every intention of training hard to give it my best. Unfortunately that didn't happen. I totally lost my running motivation and also my interest in social media. I was thinking about pulling out of the marathon and walking away from something that I once had a huge passion for.

However while thinking about all things MND I realised that the 6 people diagnosed every day and the 5,000 people living with MND don't have a chance to prepare, they run their own marathon every day knowing the next day's marathon is going to be even harder and they do it day after day during whatever time they have left, they fight and keep pushing themselves with the support of family and friends.

And those family and friends of the 6 people that die with MND every day have very little time to prepare, as one third die within a year and two thirds die within two years of diagnosis.

How do you prepare to lose the ability to walk, use your arms and hands, talk, eat, swallow, and eventually lose the ability to breathe. How do people prepare to watch helplessly as their loved ones are eventually locked in an immobile body with a brain, still able to to see and hear knowing there is nothing they can do to stop this devastating disease.

Therefore I will attempt my no prep marathon in honour of our angels and warriors. I will be on that start line proudly wearing the orange and blue, with the RUN MND family around to support. I will remember the inspiring people living with MND I had the pleasure of supporting during my time at the MND Association. I will remember their selfless carers who went through hell trying their best to look after their loved ones in any way they could.

Their strength, their indomitable spirit, their determination to battle on with such courage and dignity will get me through to the finish line
